About the Item

A striking antique wooden pricket candlestick of unusually tall, architectural form, finely turned and carved with a succession of moulded, fluted and lobed decorative elements. The candlestick has a wonderful sculptural silhouette, rising from a broad tiered base supported on three carved feet to an elongated fluted central column. Above is a shaped knop supporting the circular candle platform and original-style iron pricket spike, designed to secure a substantial candle. Particularly attractive is the beautifully aged surface, retaining remnants of its historic painted and gilded decoration. Muted green, red and gilt tones remain visible beneath generations of wear, creating a rich, timeworn patina that gives the piece considerable character and decorative presence. Its proportions and ecclesiastical character suggest it may originally have been intended for a church, chapel or similarly formal interior. Today it would make an impressive decorative accent in a country house, traditional interior or collection of ecclesiastical and architectural antiques. The candlestick remains in good antique condition with substantial age-related wear, rubbing, losses to the painted and gilded surfaces, marks and natural imperfections throughout. These characteristics contribute considerably to its authentic aged appearance.
