About the Item

Attributed to Emile Herbert, French, 1828-1893. Comprising a central clock and a pair of flanking lidded vases, the clock on a red and black marble base with Pharaoh busts on either side, surmounted with the Egyptian queen 'Isis' enthroned, the two vases similarly decorated. Clock height 69cm, width 35.5cm, depth 20cm, vases height 49cm, width 16cm. A versatile artist active during the second half of the 19th century, Herbert produced romantic bronzes and marbles, as well as furniture and decorative pieces in the neoclassical and Egyptian styles. He exhibited at many of the important exhibitions including the Paris Exhibition of 1855, the London Exhibition of 1862 and again in 1867 when he won the Gold Medal. Some of his bronze statues are included in the collections of prestigious public institutions such as his Amazon Preparing for Battle, which is in the collection of the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. and another captivating bronze composition, Mephistopheles, which is in the collection of the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University. A neoclassical gilt bronze, ebony and marble table executed in 1878 is in the collection of the Musèe D'Orsay.

This fine clock set is crafted in patinated bronze, red marble and ornamented throughout with exquisite ormolu. It is the work of Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie, a French company highly celebrated for their superlative clock sets and garnitures. The set comprises a central clock and a pair of flanking candelabra. The clock is set on an oval plinth of red marble with ormolu feet. To the front of the plinth is set a relief panel in patinated bronze. Upon the plinth is set a fluted column of patinated bronze with ormolu flowers and banding, surmounted by an ormolu urn. The circular clock dial is set to the front of the column, with a face of red marble and Roman numerals in ormolu. Next to the clock face column stands the full length figure of the Greek goddess of hunting, Diana, holding a torch cast in patinated bronze. The pair of flanking candelabra are set on square plinths of red marble with canted angles and ormolu feet. A refined French mantel clock garniture set executed in gilt bronze and white stone, dating to the 19th century. The ensemble consists of a central pendulum clock accompanied by a matching pair of decorative urns. The architectural composition with classical columns reflects the neoclassical taste characteristic of French decorative arts of the period. The clock features an enamel dial with black numerals and finely shaped hands, housed within a cylindrical case suspended between two columns. The case is adorned with cast gilt bronze mounts incorporating floral and classical decorative motifs, while the pendulum is decorated with a sun mask motif. The accompanying urns echo the design language of the clock, combining white stone bodies with gilt bronze mounts and twin handles, creating a balanced three-piece composition suitable for mantel or console display.
