12 jewel, ratchet-tooth lever balance escapement, the fine quality of which is evident in such features as the sharp, flat, high finish on the steel work. The movement is classified as a timepiece, which simply means it not strike the hours or half-hours. There is a single winding square visible from the back; the hands are set via a smaller square within an engraved arrow indicating a clockwise direction. The "hands" indicator and "slow, fast" regulation are engraved in English meaning the clock was made for export across the Channel, this piece being retailed in London. The retailers name is now very faint though it is possible read "London" underneath. The retailers name was added after the enamel dial had been made and fired. Slender Roman hours accompanied by Arabic five minute markers set either side of a fine minute-track, were painted beneath the enamel and therefore remain crisp, whilst the later, over painted retailer nomenclature often fades. There are n o cracks or chips in the dial, it is in good condition and has not needed to be restored. The case is made from 18 individual cast brass components which were finished by hand, gilded and finally lacquered. Typical of an attractive oval case, the handle is a combination of curves and scrolls. Each of the five surrounding glasses is bevelled-edged. Pierre Drocourt was an outstanding carriage clockmaker who produced some sublime clocks from his workshops in Paris and Saint-Nicholas-d'Aliermont. He was succeeded by his son Alfred who continued to maintain his fathers high standards. Both won a number of medals at the various trade Exhibitions across France and in London during the second half of the 19th century. Their trademark, stamped into the back plate, of a cartouche with a carriage clock between a D&C has long been a symbol excellence.
