About the Item

An impressive and most stunning Austrian 19th century Empire st. Ormolu, Bronze and Rouge Griotte marble clock, stamped for Franz Sedlak, Vienna. This exceptional clock is raised on a rectangular stepped Rouge Griotte marble base over Ormolu ball supports. Above is a front and center Rocaille designed reserve of scrolled designs and two crossed torches with eternal flames. The patinated Bronze clock case displays the original Bronze dial with Gilt Roman numerals and Ormolu hands. Above the dial is a stunning female allegorical figure supported on clouds and raising a flaming torch toward the sky, a symbol of enlightenment, truth, knowledge and liberty. She is wearing a flowing garment while having a star in her hair, symbolizing guidance and hope. To her side is the Gallic rooster symbolizing vigilance and courage. All original gilding throughout. Franz Sedlak (active c. 1930s) was a Viennese-trained Austrian clockmaker and graduate of the Federal School of Horology at Karlstein an der Thaya. A documented regulator wall clock completed as his student work in 1936 survives in the collection of the Wien Museum, illustrating the precision craftsmanship of Austria's foremost horological training institution.
