About the Item

A monumental vertical sculpture in black basalt by Spanish-born artist Antonio Davila (1934–1993), titled Gamme Chromatique and executed in 1986. The work balances refined geometric lines against the raw density of volcanic stone — a dialogue between formal rigour and mineral force that defines Davila's mature sculptural language. Davila trained in Italy under Marino Marini, one of the foremost sculptors of the twentieth century, before teaching sculpture in Mexico during the 1960s. A tireless traveller, he worked marble, granite, and local stones across several continents, developing a practice rooted in direct carving and a deep sensitivity to material. His work was shown at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles (1990), the Hommage Réalités Nouvelles (1994), and a retrospective in Pontevedra (1997). Gamme Chromatique is catalogued in Volume I of the artist's catalogue raisonné (Antonio Davila : catalogue raisonné, Jacqueline Davila, Blurb, 2013). The work is monogrammed AD and comes directly from the artist's studio.
