About the Item

Monumentality explores apparent scale — how an ordinary object can make a viewer feel they're standing before something far larger than it truly is. Johan Pertl sets cast crystal glass against marble: two materials that are, paradoxically, very heavy, yet both read to the eye as fragile, as if they could crack or collapse under their own weight. Each piece in the collection plays on this instability — the tension between weight and transparency. Forms that look as though they might give way, yet remain completely stable. Mass that should feel heavy, yet lets light pass straight through. It's this contradiction that creates a quiet sense of imbalance, one that stops the viewer for a moment — a reminder that scale isn't really about size, but about how strongly something manages to affect us.
