About the Item

A monumental abstract sculpture by French artist Michel Bérard (Orléans, 1933 — Béziers, 2020), constructed from superimposed wooden discs rising on a dedicated wooden base. Standing 184 cm, the work develops a formal language at once geometric and organic, the stacked discs generating rhythm, depth, and sculptural dynamism through the natural warmth and grain of the wood itself. Bérard was known primarily for his work in bronze and patinated metal, often drawing on organic forms, animals, and stylised figures. This sculpture in wood represents a different register of his practice, one in which material simplicity and compositional rigour take precedence. The superimposed discs create a sense of vertical movement and accumulation, the slight variations between each element introducing a subtle organic pulse into what might otherwise be a purely geometric composition. Bérard's work sits within the French tradition of decorative arts that dissolves the boundary between sculpture and interior design, producing objects that carry artistic weight while inhabiting domestic and institutional spaces with equal authority. This piece, with its refined sculptural language and monumental scale, is a strong example of that tradition.
