The work references the traditional artist’s easel while transforming it into a symbolic structure, an object that suggests support, revelation, and the act of creation itself. Fabricated and hand-worked in steel, the piece features Splady’s signature forged textures contrasted with smooth patinated planes, emphasizing both material strength and the quiet energy embedded within the form. About: Founded in 1971 by American sculptor Charles D. Splady, Splady Art Studios has become one of the Bay Area’s enduring centers for sculptural innovation in metal. Rooted in traditional fine metalworking and casting techniques, the studio bridges art, architecture, and design with a commitment to material integrity and craft. For over five decades, the studio has played a pivotal role in the realization of significant works by leading artists including Peter Voulkos, Manuel Neri, Claes Oldenburg, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Isamu Noguchi, Henry Moore, Beniamino “Benny” Bufano, Robert Hudson, and many others. Its contributions are woven into the history of West Coast sculpture and beyond. Today, under continued leadership, the studio remains a site of experimentation and refinement—where bronze and steel are shaped through both traditional and contemporary processes. Known for its quiet mastery, technical precision, and deep material knowledge, Splady Art Studios supports artists in the development of ambitious works while continuing its own sculptural investigations.
