About the Item

This superb Japanese Meiji period bronze study has exceptionally good detailing. It portrays a figure group of a large muscular bull elephant being attacked and fighting with two tigers. One is clinging to his back and the other has been knocked to the ground lying on its back with the elephant to about to stamp on it. The sculptor has cleverly captured this intense scene, showing the natural movement and detailed features of these fabulous animals. This bronze is hand finished with much of the fine detailing having been done by hand chasing with a chisel. It has a good dark brown patination and is signed by the artist with a seal mark on the underside of the elephant. This pleasing and impressive piece comes with its original hand carved hardwood stand. Measurements; Bronze height 16.5cm x width 22cm x depth 11cm Stand height 2cm x width 26cm x depth 15cm.

A carved soapstone Raj period Indian study of elephants and two Maharajas C1910

A carved soapstone Raj period Indian study of elephants and two Maharajas C1910

Located in Central England, GB

A fine Indian Raj period carved soapstone study of a large elephant carrying two Maharajas and their guide seated high on its back in an elaborate carriage surrounded by a group of young elephants. This superb carving shows great skill from the highly proficient craftsman who has deeply carved and pierced the study with three dimensional detailing. And just to make his work more difficult the body of the large elephant is hollow carved and pierced with a small perfectly carved study of another elephant at its centre which is incredibly difficult to achieve working through the tight delicately carved and pierced scrolls which form its body. Indian, circa 1910 Height 21cm x width 11cm x depth 9cm Thank you for looking at this unusual hand carved soapstone elephant...
