This striking French Art Deco ceramic sculpture depicts a powerful black bear and was designed by Desbarbieux for the Saint-Clément manufactory in France during the 1920s. Combining a bold silhouette with carefully modeled details, the piece reflects the strong interest in stylized animal sculpture that characterized French decorative arts between the wars. The bear is presented in a long, low profile, giving the sculpture a dynamic and sculptural presence. Its deep black ceramic surface is enhanced by subtle bronze-green patination applied within the recessed areas of the eyes, ears, mouth, and signature. These carefully placed accents add depth, contrast, and visual richness while emphasizing the animal’s expressive features.
