About the Item

A charming and highly collectible French Art Deco ceramic sculpture by renowned animalier Charles Lemanceau, created for the celebrated Saint-Clément faience factory in the 1920s. This beautifully modeled composition portrays a mother elephant gently watching over her calf, capturing a touching moment of protection and affection with the elegant stylization that made Lemanceau one of the leading sculptors of the Art Deco period. Finished in rich, flowing shades of warm brown and ivory glaze, the sculpture combines graceful lines with remarkable attention to anatomical detail. The harmonious composition reflects the refined aesthetic of French decorative arts during the interwar years, making it equally suitable as a sophisticated decorative object or an important addition to an Art Deco ceramics collection. Dimensions: Width: 13.4 in (34 cm) • Height: 12.2 in (31 cm) • Depth: 4.25 in (10.8 cm). Charles Lemanceau (1905–1980) studied at the prestigious École Estienne, École Boulle, and École des Arts Appliqués, receiving the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris early in his career. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, he collaborated with leading French manufacturers including Saint-Clément, Primavera, DIM, and Sainte-Radegonde, while exhibiting alongside celebrated figures such as Le Corbusier, Henri Matisse, Jean Dunand, Jules Leleu, Fernand Léger, and Raoul Dufy. His expressive animal sculptures remain among the finest achievements of French Art Deco ceramics. An exceptional example of authentic French Art Deco design, this sculpture is ideal for collectors of Charles Lemanceau, Saint-Clément ceramics, French animalier sculpture, and museum-quality decorative arts, bringing timeless elegance and warmth to both classic and contemporary interiors
