About the Item

This exceptional French Art Deco ceramic fox sculpture from the 1920s, created by Gustave Gillot for Berlot-Mussier, is a striking example of early 20th-century French decorative art. The piece illustrates the famous fable “The Fox and the Grapes” by Jean de La Fontaine, capturing both narrative charm and refined stylization typical of the Art Deco movement. Measuring 18.9 inches (48 cm) in width, 8.7 inches (22 cm) in height, and 4.3 inches (11 cm) in depth, the sculpture features a sleek, elongated silhouette with smooth, flowing lines. The fox is depicted in an upward-reaching pose, conveying movement and subtle tension while maintaining a balanced and elegant composition. The base is marked “Odyv” and signed “G. Gillot,” confirming its authenticity and connection to the artist (see photos). Gustave Gillot (1888–1965) was a notable French sculptor who trained in Paris under the renowned Paul Landowski. Gillot began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1913 and continued to present his work at major Parisian salons, earning recognition for his refined craftsmanship and artistic sensitivity. His sculptures often reflect a harmonious blend of academic training and modern Art Deco aesthetics, particularly in his treatment of animal forms. This piece is a rare and highly collectible work, ideal for collectors of French Art Deco ceramics, animal sculptures, and literary-themed decorative objects. It combines artistic elegance, historical significance, and timeless appeal.
