About the Item

This striking French Art Deco terracotta sculpture was created in France during the 1930s and features a graceful composition of swallows arranged around a glass centerpiece. Combining sculptural terracotta with transparent glass, the piece beautifully reflects the decorative imagination and refined craftsmanship associated with French interiors of the Art Deco period. The swallows are modeled with elegant, streamlined forms that convey a remarkable sense of movement and lightness. Their elongated wings and dynamic arrangement create a lively composition, while the warm natural tones of the terracotta contrast beautifully with the glass element at the center. Birds, and particularly swallows, were popular decorative motifs during the Art Deco era, appreciated for their associations with freedom, movement, and modernity. Dimensions: 17.3 in. wide × 9 in. high × 10 in. deep (44 × 23 × 25.5 cm). With its generous horizontal proportions, the sculpture has a strong decorative presence without appearing overly monumental. Originally conceived as a centerpiece, it would be equally effective today displayed on a dining table, console, sideboard, mantel, or within a curated collection of French decorative arts. The sculpture is marked underneath the base. It remains in very good vintage condition, with only minor traces of age consistent with a decorative object dating from the 1930s. These subtle signs contribute to the authenticity and character of the piece. A charming and uncommon example of French Art Deco ceramic sculpture, this terracotta and glass swallow centerpiece combines naturalistic inspiration with the streamlined aesthetic of the period. It would make a distinctive addition to a collection of 1930s French design, Art Deco animal sculpture, or vintage European decorative objects.
