About the Item

In this listing you will find a striking polychrome terracotta architectural fragment in the form of a projecting canine head, likely representing a stylized dog or fox, dating to the late 18th century. Originating from Central Europe, this sculptural element would have originally functioned as part of an exterior cornice or façade—possibly as a decorative corbel or waterspout—imbued with both ornamental and protective symbolism. The expressive head, with its elongated snout, pronounced brows, and radiating, finely textured fur, reflects a vernacular interpretation of Baroque animal motifs. The carving is bold and characterful, capturing a vivid, almost anthropomorphic presence typical of provincial craftsmanship of the period. Traces of the original polychromy remain visible throughout, including warm ochre and cream tones to the fur, contrasted by darker grey and black elements, with areas of natural weathering and patina developed over time. The surface wear, minor losses, and pigment remnants attest to its long exposure to the elements and reinforce its authenticity as an exterior architectural element. The fragment is mounted on a custom black stone base, transforming it into a sculptural object suitable for interior display while preserving its historical integrity. A rare and evocative piece that bridges architectural salvage and folk sculpture, offering strong visual impact and decorative appeal. When purchased piece will be carefully wrapped up and packed in a way to avoid any damages in transport. As soon as shipped you will receive the tracking number for your package. If you have any additional questions regarding this piece please feel free to contact me. Happy shopping!
