About the Item

A set of four handmade stoneware birds by Swedish ceramicist Bengt Wall, crafted in his Trosa studio in the 1970s. Each unique and hand-signed, the figures combine Nordic folk charm with a modernist sense of form - simple, satisfyingly heavy, and full of quiet personality. The shapes are compact and weighty, with a calm presence that reflects both Nordic folk tradition and modernist reduction. They are partially glazed in soft tones of blue and grey, highlighting the sculpted details and giving each bird its own subtle individuality. The figures embody Wall’s distinctive language - a dialogue between folk sculpture and modernist abstraction. His work belongs to the intimate side of Scandinavian studio ceramics, where function gives way to form and emotion. His stylised animals are rooted in folk art yet refined through a distinctly modern sensibility: personal, tactile, and expressive. Sets like this, composed of several unique examples, are rare and highly regarded among collectors of Swedish mid-century and postwar ceramics. Good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age; two of the birds show discreet touch-ups on the beak area, scarcely noticeable within the original texture of the glaze. With their timeless simplicity and warm materiality, these birds make a serene and characterful accent whether displayed together or individually. • Heights 5–8 cm (2–3.1 in) • Hand-modelled stoneware with partial gloss glaze • Period: 1970s • Made in Trosa, Sweden • Good vintage condition with minimal wear; two birds have discreet retouching on the beaks Note on the Designer: Bengt Wall was a Swedish ceramic artist active in Trosa from the mid-twentieth century. His studio production focused on small sculptural figures, often animals, characterised by honest materials, strong silhouettes, and a tactile interplay of matte and glazed surfaces. Each of his creations is unique - rooted in Nordic folk tradition yet refined through a distinctly modern sensibility.
