About the Item

A charming and highly collectible Viennese cold-painted bronze sculpture depicting a Dachshund, also known as the beloved “sausage dog.” Created in Austria around 1900, this finely cast bronze exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail associated with the renowned Vienna bronze tradition of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The figure displays remarkable character and realism, capturing the distinctive elongated body and alert expression of the Dachshund breed. Hand-finished using the cold-painted technique, the sculpture retains its original patina and painted surface, which have developed a beautiful authenticity over time. Minor wear is present and consistent with age, contributing to the piece’s historical charm and originality. Vienna bronzes became highly sought after for their quality, artistic merit, and whimsical subjects, and animal figures remain among the most desirable examples for collectors today. This miniature sculpture is a wonderful representation of that tradition and would make an excellent addition to a collection of Austrian decorative arts, animalier bronzes, or antique desk accessories. A rare and elegant example of early twentieth-century Viennese craftsmanship.
