About the Item

A refined Roman.. or Roman style carved marble head of a young child, Italian, 18th century or earlier, presented as a Grand Tour cabinet object beneath an accompanying glass cloche dome. The head is modeled with softly rounded cheeks, small contemplative features, and deeply carved curling hair, recalling antique Roman depictions of children, putti, and Cupid-like figures. Its fragmentary scale, warm age toning, and later ebonized display mount give the piece the character of an antiquarian collector’s object, intended for presentation in the manner of a classical sculptural fragment. Measurements: 7.25" h x 3.25" w (dome), 3" h x 2.5" w (head itself). We are unable to confirm the exact age of this piece, however, it does appear very early and came from the estate of European Antiquities.
