About the Item

A striking late 19th-century Italian carved marble bust after the celebrated satyr faun (also known as the Laughing Faun), one of the most admired sculptures of classical antiquity. Expertly carved in fine Carrara marble and raised upon an elegant dark grey and red-veined marble socle, the bust depicts the youthful faun with his head turned gently to one side, his characteristic grin and small goat's horns conveying the playful spirit of this mythological woodland deity. The quality of the carving is particularly evident in the expressive facial modelling and the richly sculpted curls of the hair. Impressive in scale and highly decorative, the sculpture possesses considerable theatrical presence and exemplifies the enduring fascination with classical art that flourished during the 19th century. Such works were especially sought after by wealthy travellers undertaking the Grand Tour, who commissioned or acquired marble reproductions of famous antique sculptures as souvenirs of their journeys through Italy. The original satyr is an ancient Roman marble sculpture dating from approximately the 1st century BC and is today housed in the Glyptothek Museum, Munich. Formerly part of the renowned collection of antiquities assembled by Cardinal Alessandro Albani at the Villa Albani in Rome, the sculpture became one of the most celebrated antiquities visited by European aristocrats and scholars during the 18th and 19th centuries. Following the Napoleonic campaigns, the original was transferred to Paris before ultimately entering the collection of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, from whom it passed to Munich, where it remains today.
