LARGE HEAD OF JUNO BARBERINI, 2ND CENTURY AD - PLASTER H: 72cm A beautiful, large, life-size head from the Barberini era. A faithful, museum-quality reproduction in plaster. Standing 72 cm tall, it is meticulously finished. Made of a single piece with its base. It weighs 15 kg. The Hera Barberini, also known as Juno Barberini, is a sculpture depicting the goddess Hera (or Juno), a 2nd-century AD Roman marble copy of a Greek bronze original. The statue was discovered in Rome in the late 17th century and is currently on display in the Vatican Museums. The statue was excavated by the antiquarian Leonardo Agostini in the late 17th century on the Viminale Hill, near the monastery associated with the church of San Lorenzo in Panisperna, where the ancient baths known as Lavacrum Agrippinae stood. Its identification is due to Cardinal Francesco Barberini, its first owner. The statue depicts a goddess wearing a crown and a peplos, which tightens around her body, revealing her curves; the peplos falls to the height of her left shoulder, almost revealing her breasts. The restored right arm, like the nose, rests its weight on a scepter, while the left hand holds a patera. The sculpture is a Roman copy of a Greek original, probably attributable to Alcamenes; Lewis Richard Farnell wrote that "the not uncommon repetition of the subject suggests a Greek original of some renown." It is currently housed in the Pio-Clementino Museum, part of the Vatican Museums, and has sometimes been suggested as the goddess Ceres in connection with its identification.
