19th century statue of lovers in spelter on faux marble depicts two young lovers in classical raiment enjoying their vitality and company. This idyllic notion rose to incredible popularity during the Belle Epoque, culminating in a variety of sculptors depicting such scenarios in bronze. Then copies would be made of the original bronzes which were cast in spelter and given a hand-applied finish to mimic the look of bronze. Note the detail in the garments, the bough of flowers, even the love birds on the ground at their feet! The Classic poses were derived from the French fascination with ancient Greek and Roman statuary...

Pair 19th Century French Bronze Statues by Auguste Moreau '1855-1919'

Pair 19th Century French Bronze Statues by Auguste Moreau '1855-1919'

Located in Dallas, TX

Pair 19th Century French bronze statues by Louis Auguste Moreau (1855-1919) are exemplary examples of the glorification of the simple rural life celebrated by artists in France during the Belle Epoque. A distinctive departure from rendering affluent families and lifestyles as dictated by the many patrons of art over the centuries, this informal movement gave a glimpse into the lives of everyday people. In this example, we have two young maidens, one carrying a bundle over her shoulder and a basket in her left hand, while the other totes a basket over her shoulder and a couple of protesting chickens in her right hand! Each maiden is modestly dressed...
