About the Item

A Black Forest hand-carved limewood figure portrays a young man from the medieval period dressed in a cloaked tunic and open-toed boots playing a set of traditional Swiss bagpipes called Schweizer Sackpfeife. This handmade wind instrument, similar to our Scottish variety, was commonly played from the medieval period to the early 18th century. This finely carved figure is made from a single piece of dense lime wood. It dates to circa 1880 and is in perfect condition with its mellow coloured timber and rich dark patina. Late 19th Century Japanese Carved Hardwood Okimono of a Man, circa 1890

Late 19th Century Japanese Carved Hardwood Okimono of a Man, circa 1890

Located in Central England, GB

Late 19th C Japanese carved hardwood okimono of a man, circa 1890 This top quality and most impressive large scale Japanese carved hardwood okimono superbly depicts a characterful study of a delightfully crafty looking man. He is dressed simply in a robe. On his back, he has a rolled woven mat for resting and a turtle shell sun hat hangs below. On his side hanging from his waist sash, there is a simple hand fan made from woven palm leaves and around his neck, he is wearing a string of very large beads. This unfortunate character is on a journey and he seems to have lost or broken one sandal. His foot is sore and he is resting it on his gnarly walking stick. He has one arm outstretched and is holding out a large piece of fresh fruit as an offering perhaps to barter for new sandals...

19th Century Carved Oak Study of St. Paul the Apostle, English, circa 1860

19th Century Carved Oak Study of St. Paul the Apostle, English, circa 1860

Located in Central England, GB

This remarkable and very finely carved study of the biblical figure of St Paul, The Apostle who was originally Saul of Tarsus born BCE. Tarsus in Cilicia (now in Turkey). He died circa 62 – 64 CE in Rome, Italy. He was one of the leaders of the first generation Christians and was often considered to be the most important person after Jesus in the history of Christianity. This highly accomplished wood carving is a difficult material for detailing English oak. It shows him standing barefoot and dressed in simple robes with a sword in one hand and a scroll in the other. His face has been well captured with a good expression, detailed hair and a long beard. The small scale of this figure would indicate it was not originally church decoration...
