About the Item

Arm Holding a Shield Spain, 17th century Wood 18 x 47 x 15 cm This remarkable fragment depicts a right arm grasping a shield, most likely detached from a monumental figure of a knight. The hand, with its carefully modeled fingers, grips the buckler with a firmness that speaks to the sculptor's mastery of anatomy and movement. The wood, dark mahogany in tone and tending toward black in places, bears a deep patina consistent with liturgical use or prolonged display. Traces of an original black polychromy are clearly visible, alongside the natural effects of time: cracks, surface chips, and woodworm damage characteristic of aged timber. The vigorous carving, the monumentality of the gesture, and the sobriety of the surface treatment all place this work firmly within the great tradition of Spanish Baroque sculpture of the 17th century, which favored dramatic expressiveness and formal density. This fragment may be associated with workshops in Castile or Andalusia, regions particularly prolific in the production of polychrome wood sculpture during this period.
