About the Item

A superb Art Deco bronze by the Italian-French sculptor Amedeo Gennarelli, depicting a kneeling female nude, her torso arched backward and her head thrown back, one arm raised behind her, in a pose of great sensual tension and movement. The figure kneels atop a naturalistically modeled rocky outcrop cast integrally with the rectangular base, a favored device of Gennarelli's that grounds his idealized figures in a tactile, textured setting. Cast in bronze with a rich, dark brown-black patina, the sculpture showcases Gennarelli's hallmark treatment of the female form: elongated, elegant proportions, a smooth and highly finished figure contrasted against the roughly textured naturalistic base, and a dynamic, spiraling pose characteristic of the finest Art Deco figural bronzes. The piece is signed "A. Gennarelli" in the cast to the base and stamped with a "Cire Perdue" (lost-wax) foundry mark, confirming both the artist's authorship and the fine casting method employed. A striking and confidently modeled example of Gennarelli's oeuvre, this bronze would make a compelling addition to any collection of French Art Deco sculpture. About the Artist: Amedeo Gennarelli (1881-1943) Amedeo Gennarelli was an Italian-born sculptor who became one of the leading figures of French Art Deco figurative sculpture. Born in Naples in 1881, he trained there under the sculptor Francesco Jerace before relocating to Paris around 1909, where he would spend the remainder of his career immersed in the city's vibrant early 20th-century art scene. Gennarelli made his exhibition debut at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français in 1913, and continued to show there regularly through 1936, earning a bronze medal in 1923. He worked across bronze, terracotta, marble, and granite, and is best known for his sensuous, idealized depictions of the female nude, often captured in dynamic, twisting poses that reveal a mastery of anatomy and movement rooted in his academic training but rendered with the streamlined elegance of the Art Deco aesthetic. His smaller bronzes and terracottas were sold commercially through Alfred Dunhill's shops in Paris, London, and New York, bringing his work to an international clientele. By the 1930s, Gennarelli was recognized as a significant voice in the era's Neoclassical revival, and he was associated with a Paris-based circle of figurative sculptors dedicated to reasserting beauty and realism in figurative art during a period of increasing abstraction. He remained active in France until his death in Paris in 1943. Today, Gennarelli's sculptures are held in private collections internationally and appear regularly at auction and in specialist Art Deco galleries, prized for their technical refinement and unmistakable period style.
