About the Item

1920s Art Déco glazed ceramic sculpture with base 'La Femme voilée de Marrakech' by Céline Lepage, France By: Céline Lepage Material: ceramic, paint, enamel, clay Technique: cast, pressed, painted, hand-painted, hand-crafted, enameled, glazed Dimensions: 8 in x 8.5 in x 29 in Date: early 20th century, circa 1920 Style: Art Déco Place of origin: France 'La Femme voilée de Marrakech' exemplifies the refined aesthetics of 1920s Art Déco sculpture. This glazed ceramic piece, crafted in France, portrays a woman enveloped in a flowing white garment, her face and feet the only visible features. The figure stands atop a vibrant square base, creating a striking contrast with the predominantly monochrome form. Céline Lepage's mastery of clean lines and simplified volumes is evident in this work. The absence of intricate details allows the sculpture's graceful silhouette and subtle contours to take center stage. The interplay between the stark white drapery and the colorful base showcases the artist's keen sense of balance and composition. The initials 'C.L.' can be found on the side of the sculpture's base, confirming its authorship. Born in Warsaw, Poland, to French parents in 1882, Lepage lived and worked in Paris, exhibiting at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts salons. Her contributions to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes included bas-relief sculptures for the Pomone pavilion. This piece reflects Lepage's fascination with Moroccan subjects and her ability to distill complex forms into elegant, modernist interpretations.
