About the Item

Auguste Moreau (1834 - 1917) A Very Fine French 19th-20th Century Art-Nouveau Patinated Bronze figure of Iris, depicting a graceful nude maiden Iris. The female nude figure is modeled standing in a gentle contrapposto, walking barefoot among a naturalistic cluster of reeds and a tree trunk. Her downward gaze and delicate hand gesture toward the foliage capture a moment of quiet reflection or discovery. Notable fine details include a dragonfly resting at her feet and intricate floral ornamentation in her hair, after the model by Auguste Moreau. The bronze is finished with an excellent, rich red-brown patina that highlights the soft modeling of the torso and the detailed textures of the organic base. The sculpture is raised on a revolving circular, waisted rouge marble pedestal (sometimes referred to as griotte or rouge marble). Signed: Aug. Moreau. A detailed brass plaque on marble plinth reads "IRIS" - "Par Aug. Moreau" Circa: Paris, 1900. Born on February 22, 1834, in Dijon, France. He was the youngest son of Jean-Baptiste Moreau, a respected sculptor and painter, and brother to fellow sculptors Mathurin and Hippolyte Moreau. He received his early training from his father and later studied under notable masters such as Aimé Millet, Augustin Drumont, and Jean Thomas at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1861 and exhibited there regularly until 1913, showcasing a prolific output over five decades. Auguste Moreau is primarily known for a style that bridges classical academicism and the fluid, organic lines of Art Nouveau, his work frequently depicts young maidens in flowing, diaphanous dresses, often adorned with floral motifs, birds, dragonflies or butterflies.
