About the Item

This iconic item is a Victorian-era antique cast iron "Mr. Punch and Toby" doorstop. It depicts the famous character Mr. Punch from the historic British puppet show “Punch and Judy,” alongside his loyal dog, Toby. Punch is modeled with a hooked nose, a prominent chin and a wide grin. He wears a traditional jester's ruff collar and a curved, decorated cap. Seated at Punch's feet on the left side is Toby. He is wearing his signature costume hat and a ruff collar to match his master. The object features early gilt-paint highlights layered over darker iron. Foundries often applied this metallic gold finish to make rugged cast-iron mimic more expensive, luxurious cast brass. Visible green and brown oxidation spots on the back indicate a genuine, aged surface resulting from decades of exposure to moisture on the floor. The back and bottom view show a hollowed-out, concave shape. This ‘half-doll’ construction style is characteristic of late 19th-century sand-casting. It allowed the object to look fully three-dimensional from the front while saving expensive iron and keeping the weight manageable. These door porters were mass-produced in Great Britain and the United States from approximately the 1870s to the 1910s. Renowned English foundries like Archibald Kenrick & Sons frequently produced this specific model. They were often sold in pairs alongside a matching "Judy holding the baby" doorstop.
