About the Item

Coppia di Putti in marmo di Carrara, raffigurati in posizione speculare tra loro: mollemente adagiati, il busto avanzato e con un lieve scarto laterale, un braccio è appoggiato sulla coscia, mentre quello opposto è sollevato, la mano chiusa a impugnare un elemento non pervenutoci. Una folta chioma cesellata incornicia i due volti dall’atteggiamento inespressivo. Come segnala Giuseppe Sava nella perizia da lui redatta, le fisionomie, gli sguardi e le capigliature rimandano alla bottega dei Carra, in particolare a Giovanni Pietro e Carlo, figli del capostipite Giovanni Antonio, originario del ticinese ma attivo in Lombardia. I due fratelli ereditarono la bottega paterna e strinsero una collaborazione proficua, rendendo difficile una distinzione dell’attività tra i due. Uno degli esempi più calzanti è costituito dai marmi realizzati per l’altare delle reliquie nel duomo di Montichiari (BS), dove le figure robuste e tarchiate, e con i volti dalle espressioni vacue, mostrano affinità con i nostri Putti. La coppia di sculture in esame doveva in origine appartenere a un complesso più ampio, verosimilmente una fontana, come denuncerebbe la loro gestualità, con le mani nell’atto di sorreggere i cannelli dai quali doveva zampillare l’acqua.
