About the Item

The subject is a young voluptuous partially draped nude Amazon woman who stands on a rocky outcrop, her left foot on top of an open Helmet, a quiver with arrows beside her; her torso and head turned almost awkwardly to the left. Her hair is partially braded and curls down both sides of her face. Her left arm is shackled above the wrist to a stump/outcrop behind her. In Greek mythology, the Amazons were a tribe of warrior women believed to have been the daughters of Ares and Harmonia and that they were notorious for brutality, aggressiveness and lust for war. The chasing of this bronze (detailing), is of the highest quality and it bears it's original dark brown patination. The bronze is signed A. Carrier, however there is no foundry mark. Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, 12 June 1824-4 June 1887) was a French sculptor. He was one of the founding members of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and was made an officer of the Legion of Honour in his early life. In his time he was famous for the wide range of his work-from monuments to domestic ornaments (torcheres and tabletop elements). He was known especially for his sculptures of classical women.
