French Bronze Sculpture of "Mercurio Volante"( Mercury Volant) cast and signed by F(erdinand) Barbedienne Fondeur, Ca.1850 After Giambologna (1529–1608) This finely cast bronze figure of Mercury Volant is a 19th-century reduction after the celebrated late 16th-century original by the Flemish-Italian sculptor Giambologna (Jean Boulogne). The figure depicts the Roman messenger god Mercury poised on one foot, supported by a breath of air from Zephyr, as he prepares to ascend toward the heavens—an enduring emblem of grace and movement in Renaissance sculpture. The base bears the signature “F. Barbedienne, Fondeur” and the foundry’s seal featuring the profile of Achille Collas, inventor of the réduction mécanique process. This innovative technique allowed for the precise scaling down of larger sculptures while maintaining exact proportions and surface details. Around 1838, Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas founded the firm Collas et Barbedienne in Paris. Their foundry soon became one of the most celebrated producers of bronze reductions of classical and Renaissance masterpieces. During the Grand Tour period, such bronzes were highly prized by collectors and the European elite, who sought refined reproductions of iconic works for their private collections and interiors.
