About the Item

A welded metal sculpture by American artist James Metcalf (1925–2002), depicting a stylized standing female figure wearing a mask. Executed circa 1960, this work exemplifies Metcalf’s distinctive sculptural language — elongated lines, dynamic torsion, and abstracted figuration — rooted in the post-war modernist tradition. Metcalf received the Copley Prize in 1957, one of the most prestigious awards for experimental American artists of his generation. He subsequently settled in Paris before relocating to Mexico, where he continued to develop his practice. His welded metal works draw on the formal legacies of Brancusi and Boccioni, translating their influence into a lyrical, expressive modernism of his own. The masked figure is a recurring archetype in mid-century sculpture, charged with both ritual and psychological resonance. This example, standing 72 cm in height, displays the confident, gestural quality characteristic of Metcalf’s mature work.
