About the Item

Striking in scale and full of movement, this late 19th century sporting sculpture depicts a hunting dog proudly carrying a pheasant in its mouth. Crafted in Germany circa 1895, the substantial work is signed “E. Wünsche” on the naturalistic base and attributed to German animalier sculptor Emil Wünsche (1864–1938). The same model is documented under the German title Jagdhund mit Fasan (“Hunting Hound with Pheasant”), an apt description of this animated sporting subject. The sculpture is constructed with a thin patinated brass overlay fitted over a heavy plaster or composition core. This distinctive technique gives the work the appearance, tactile presence, and considerable weight of a traditional bronze sculpture, although the exterior metal is brass rather than bronze. At 87 pounds, the piece has the substantial feel and presence one would normally associate with a large cast bronze. The hound is captured in a powerful forward stride, with carefully rendered musculature, long ears, expressive eyes, collar, paws, and textured coat. Held firmly in its mouth, the pheasant is equally finely modeled, with detailed plumage, outstretched wings, slender legs, and claws. Beneath the figures, the sculpted terrain suggests uneven ground in the field, heightening the sense of movement and realism. Raised on a broad stepped rectangular plinth, the antique sculpture has exceptional decorative presence. The rich dark brown patination further enhances its bronze-like appearance while emphasizing the depth and detail of the modeling throughout. Impressive at more than three feet wide, the sculpture would make a dramatic focal point in a library, study, hunting room, lodge, or large entry. The sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and adorns a rich, naturally aged patinated brass finish throughout. Dimensions: 36.5” W x 17.5” D x 22” H Weight: 87 pounds
