About the Item

Pair of Runners from Herculaneum - Bronze Statue, Height: 118 cm, 20th Century Carrara Marble Eyes Material: Bronze Technique: Lost-wax casting Made in: Italy Dimensions and Weight Height: 118 cm Width: 40 cm Depth: 40 cm Weight: 25 kg This bronze statue of the Runner is cast using the lost-wax technique from a cast of the original, made in the early 20th century by the historic Chiurazzi foundry in Naples. This statue faithfully reproduces the statue of the Runner located at the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum, a copy of a Greek sculpture from the late 4th - early 3rd century BC. The statue celebrates a victorious athlete in one of the great Panhellenic Games, representing the strength and determination of ancient runners. Neapolitan school; 20th century finals. “Corredores de Herculano”. Patinated bronze and marble eyes. Couple of sculptures that reproduce the model of the “Corredores de Herculano”. Two bronze sculptures built in 1754 in the Villa de los Papiros, in Herculaneum, near the peristyle of the house. These figures represent young athletes in match position, and it is believed that they are Roman copies of the 1st century BC. of original Greeks from the 4th century BC, made in the Helenistic tradition. Its dynamic and anatomically precise character reveals the high technical level of Roman sculpture and its aim to preserve the gray legacy. Today exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, these sculptures not only celebrate physical strength and the athletic ideal, but also illustrate the continuity of a classic visual language which, later on, would continue to be revalued and reproduced. During the 19th and 20th centuries, this type of hallazgos generated an authentic feeling for the Antigues, materialized in the reproduction of classical sculptures for museums, academies and private collections. The replica of mythological busts or athletic figures such as the Corredores de los Papiros was converted into a medium of aesthetic education, cultural affirmation and symbol of prestige.
