About the Item

This rare and impressive French Art Deco terracotta sculpture, titled Lady with a Greyhound, was created by French sculptor Pierre Polbert in the 1920s. Distinguished by its unusually large scale, refined composition, and elegant subject, the sculpture is an exceptional example of French decorative arts from the Art Deco period. The work depicts a sophisticated woman accompanied by a graceful greyhound, a motif that perfectly reflects the glamour, modernity, and aristocratic elegance associated with 1920s France. Polbert’s sculptural language combines stylized forms with fluid lines, carefully modeled details, and a strong sense of balance. The terracotta surface is enhanced by a richly colored finish, bringing depth and visual interest to the woman’s features, clothing, and the finely rendered coat of the dog. The sculpture is signed “Polbert” on the base, as shown in the photographs. Fully signed examples are particularly desirable, as many works attributed to the artist do not bear his complete signature. Its substantial dimensions also make this piece considerably rarer than smaller examples typically found on the market. Dimensions: Width: 26.8 inches (68 cm) Height: 17.1 inches (43.5 cm) Depth: 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) Pierre Polbert was a French sculptor and ceramic artist active during the early 20th century. He is best known for elegant representations of women accompanied by animals, including greyhounds, gazelles, and deer. His terracotta and glazed ceramic sculptures are admired for their sophisticated colors, streamlined silhouettes, and unmistakable Art Deco character. This signed French Art Deco sculpture would make a striking centerpiece in a refined interior, gallery, or important collection of European ceramics and 1920s decorative arts.
