About the Item

A rare and beautifully detailed pair of late 19th-century Parian ware figurines, depicting the biblical figures Rebecca at the Well and Ruth at the Gleaning Harvest. Dating to circa 1880 and originating from London, England, these impressive figures showcase the exceptional level of detail associated with Victorian Parian ware. The material was named for its resemblance to the fine white marble quarried on the Greek island of Paros and became particularly popular during the 19th century as an affordable alternative to carved marble. Both figurines display remarkably crisp detailing, including the intricate facial features, braided hair, fingers and toes, folds within the clothing, wheat stalks and textured decorative bases. The quality of the modelling is particularly impressive when viewed up close. Rebecca at the Well depicts Rebecca following the biblical account in Genesis, where she draws water from the well for Abraham's servant before becoming the wife of Isaac. The well and urn are hollow, with the well capable of holding water, allowing the piece to potentially be used as a decorative bud vase. Ruth at the Gleaning Harvest depicts Ruth holding a stalk of wheat while standing upon a beautifully textured foliage-style base, representing the biblical story of Ruth gathering grain during harvest. The two pieces appear to have been produced by the same modeller or workshop, with notably similar facial characteristics, hair detailing and overall quality. They make a superb matched display and would be particularly appealing to collectors of Victorian sculpture, Parian ware, biblical figures and 19th-century decorative arts.
