About the Item

A rare Spanish Gothic polychrome wood sculpture depicting Saint Margaret of Antioch, dating from the 16th century and retaining significant traces of its original painted and gilded decoration. The saint is shown standing over a dragon-like demon, one of the principal attributes associated with Saint Margaret and a defining element of her iconography. The figure displays the elongated proportions, restrained expression, and stylized drapery characteristic of late Gothic devotional sculpture in the Iberian Peninsula. Particularly appealing are the surviving remnants of original polychromy and gilding, which reveal the richness of the sculpture's original appearance. The carving remains highly expressive despite centuries of devotional use and natural wear, preserving its historical character and authenticity.
