About the Item

A 19th century Tudor revival glazed encaustic tile by Godwin of Lugwardine; one of 8 similar we have available. Dating to circa 1865, this antique tile is inspired by earlier Gothic and Tudor styling, featuring a pair of falcons or eagles between a coat of arms within a quatrefoil, the outer corners displaying leafy sprays in a deep red/brown and yellow. Examples of this exact Godwin tile design can be found in London’s V&A Museum, Ceramics Room 139, making this one an excellent collector’s piece. Godwin Tiles Though William Godwin began manufacturing quarry tiles, bricks and drainpipes at his factory in Lugwardine, Herefordshire in 1851, it wasn’t until 1852 that the firm began making encaustic floor tiles. Based on medieval prototypes, the tiles proved extremely popular and the business opened a second factory at Withington in 1863. In later years, William went into partnership with his son and traded as ‘Godwin & Co’, a name that would become reputable until long after William’s death in 1925.
