About the Item

A well-preserved and published axe head, with cream-grey patina, and a particularly fine reminder of the technological advancements achieved by our ancestors during the Neolithic period. This period marked the transition of mankind’s lifestyle from that of hunter gatherers to an agricultural way of life, laying the foundations for the rise of civilization. Carefully knapped and finished from a large flint core, this axe head was intended to be hafted to a wooden handle. Such axes were central to woodland clearance, transforming the environment and, in many communities, acquiring a status that extended beyond practical purpose. Notably, some examples, including the present piece, show minimal wear, leading scholars to propose a ceremonial or symbolic role alongside, or instead of, ordinary use. With its simple form, complemented by a sleek bronze base, it is truly a sculpture in its own right. Provenance Discovered in Buxted, Uckfield, East Sussex by Mr N. Peppe, in 1963; Collection of Simon Camm, geologist and author. Published Discovery formally recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme, Record ID Corn-17FB73. Condition Exceptionally well preserved. Intact and unrestored. Presented on bespoke bronze display stand. Please note that this item is a work of art and is thus exempt from US reciprocal tariffs.
