About the Item

This large serrated tooth once lined the mouth of the infamous prehistoric shark, the Megalodon (Carcharocles megalodon). This example, complete with the root, was discovered in the Hawthorne Formation in South Carolina, which dates to the Miocene age (c.23-5 million years before present). As the largest and most terrifying marine predator of all time, the Megalodon may have been up to 60 feet long (18.3 metres), could have weighed up to 60 tonnes, and with a bite considered the most powerful of any animal, living or extinct. Capable of biting clean through a large whale, its name fittingly translates as ʻbig tooth’. Its closest relative today is the shortfin mako shark, which by comparison grows to be only 14 feet (4.3 metres) long. With a custom display mount, it is a striking display piece for atop a desk or shelving, and an iconic piece of natural history. Provenance Discovered in the May River, Hawthorne formation, Beaufort County, South Carolina, c.2010. Condition Overall good condition. Worn edge on one right hand side towards tip. Wear consistent with age and use. Condition Intact and unrestored with bespoke bronze display base. Wear to one side of the tooth may indicate that it was used as a human tool in prehistoric times. Please note that this item is a work of art and is thus exempt from US reciprocal tariffs.
