About the Item

This poetic fragment depicting a dancing maenad dates to the Roman Imperial Period, and likely once formed part of a large vessel or cinerary urn. Gracefully carved, the female figure, dressed in a sheer, flowing gown, stretches out her arms as she tilts her head to the ground. Beneath the delicate folds of the drapery, we can make out her slender figure. Maenads were the female followers of Dionysus, known for their ecstatic dancing and ritual frenzy during the Dionysian rites. In both myth and art, they embodied the untamed power of nature. While only partially surviving, our fragment was likely once part of a wider such scene. Carved in high relief, it is reminiscent in style to that of the celebrated Lovatelli Urn, now in the Museo Nazionale Romano. Set on an understated bronze mount, it can be appreciated as a sculptural work in its own right. Provenance Collection of Dr Rudolph Schmidt (1900-1970), Switzerland; Thence by descent. Condition Fragment from a monumental vessel with original excavated surface and remains of original polish. Mounted on bespoke bronze display base.
