About the Item

An eclectic assemblage of eight ostrich eggs mounted on a mixed assortment of antique candlestick bases created by artist Ira Yeager (American 1938-2022). The eight eggs are mounted on eight varied bases, creating a curious mix of forms and finishes. The set included two pairs of two different finials, one pair crafted of patinated mustard-toned stepped and fluted wood columns on stepped plinth bases and dark turned collars, and the other pair crafted with Neoclassical-style carvings, with acanthus carvings, meandering greek key motifs, ball feet, and central garland columns, all in a dark charcoal-toned paint. The rest of the set consists of four unique single bases, a carved nickel-toned column with turned accents on a stepped base, a carved wood urn-form with acanthus and garland carvings on a stepped base in a Louis XVI style, a slender column in a aged verdigris tone on the carved wood with fluted and turned accents and a petal collar, and finally a barley-twist column with an amber-toned finish on the wood with a darkly toned twisted overlay on the wood on a circular base with an unusual face painted onto the egg on in teal and varied blue-green tones. The whimsical set repurposes antique and modern styles in a way only Ira could create. He often painted antique furniture for his displays in his Calistoga, California studio to display along side his art. Displayed together, the set becomes a curated vignette or tablescape, ideal for a mantel, dining table, or console as an eclectic and unusual accent piece tied together by the repeated form of the eggs. Bases vary in material, period, and scale, measuring between 5-9" wide and deep, and 19-24" tall. Sold as a set of eight. From the estate of the artist Ira Yeager in Calistoga, CA.
