About the Item

There is beauty to be found in moments of adversity, the struggle that makes victory that much sweeter. Strength and poise are revealed in “Adversity.” At first glance, gogottes may appear as man-made sculptures. In fact, they are rare sandstone rocks painstakingly excavated from an ancient sand dune near Fontainebleau in Northern France. The ebb and flow of water through the sands “sculpts” each curve and contour. The concretion of quartz and silica lends an almost pure white appearance, enhanced by the custom-made lustrous black base. Formed within a rock deposited in Fontainebleau by Aeolian sand dunes during the Oligocene period, 24-34 million years ago, the process creating gogottes is only partially understood. Silica rich water filtered through the fine quartz sands, mined for centuries to make high-quality glass, resulting in a concretion with a similar composition to quartz crystal, chalcedony and agate. Gogottes have long inspired art and design, from Louis XIV of France including them in Versailles gardens to surrealists like Jean Arp and Henry Moore. Each piece in the Stefano Piccini Bespoke Nature “Sculpted by Nature” collection was selected for exceptional artistic appeal and reflects Stefano Piccini’s philosophy of bringing the past into the future—where nature, science, and design converge in a collectible work of art. A statement in modern biophilic design, it is conceived to endure as a living legacy of luxury.
