About the Item

composed in its original matrix. Preserved in exquisite detail, with the stem and veins almost reminiscent of a botanical study, it is a remarkable snapshot of life 50 million years ago. Large unrestored Ivy leaves such as the present example are some of the most prized leaves found in the Green River Formation. The species that yielded the present leaf is undescribed but believed to be of the Order Apiales, Family Araliaceae. Today there are over 250 species of Araliaceae, from shrubs and vines to small trees. Cf. Lance Grande’s landmark text, ‘The Lost World of Fossil Lake’, p.317. This specimen originates from the Green River Formation of Wyoming, one of the most celebrated fossil localities in the world. During the early Eocene, this region was dominated by a complex subtropical lake system, and lush vegetation. The vast lake beds created the ideal conditions for the preservation of ancient life. Almost frozen in time, this example dates to the period right after the major meteorite impact that caused a catastrophic loss of Earth’s biodiversity, when the planet’s flora and fauna was renewing itself into the early iteration of the environment we know today. A poetic survivor from prehistory, it is also a particularly aesthetic example with a provenance back to the season it was found. Provenance Discovered on Lewis Ranch, Wyoming, USA in 2022 by Tony Lindgren. Condition Preserved on the original matrix with no overpainting or restoration.
