About the Item

Polished Ammonite Fossil with Red Flashes, Around 110 Million Years Old, with Beautiful Glowing / Iridescent Flashes of Color and some leafy patterns peaking out. ***NOTE: Our 1stDibs store is closing end May and items will not be available thereafter.*** A stand like the one shown will be included as a gift with your purchase, though may be a different color metal stand, possibly a gold tone to complement the ammonite. Since this is a prehistoric fossil it will show its age (of course!) potentially such as cracks, pits, scratches, etc. We do our best to find the nicest possible items with the least bothersome imperfections. General Information: Measurements are approximate and generally represent the highest, widest, and thickest areas of an item. Species and where discovered are estimated based on available comparisons, research of others, and/or the source from which we obtained the specimen as we are not fossil experts. Please expect that prehistoric items such as fossils may have signs of wear, use, or need for cleaning. Some may also have had repairs/restorations or have been sealed for preservation's sake. Please be aware that the color on your monitor and/or in your environment may look slightly different than in ours, so color is not guaranteed to be exact. Please also keep in mind that vintage and older items usually will show some indication of previous ownership and handling. Buyers of vintage and older items are presumed to understand and accept these. Since we do not do returns, please feel free to send questions if you have any before your purchase and we will be pleased to respond. #polishedammonite #largeammonitefossil #ammonite #Decor #naturalworld #naturalspecimen #fossils #prehistoric #ocean #sea

A large red iridescent ammonite fossil dating from the late cretaceous period (100.5 – 66 million years ago). This huge plancenticeras ammonite is approximately 16 inches tall and has an iridescent lustre that showcases a vibrant red hue. Once a living creature, this ammonite has developed its red iridescent lustre over millions of years of compression, transforming into a striking gemstone. A rare find. Provenance: From the fascinating collection of Gordon Walkden (1944-2022), emeritus Professor of Geology at Aberdeen University. Affectionally known as Aberdeen’s answer to Indiana Jones, Walkden contributed enormously to research through his papers and talks on British marbles, minerals and fossils...
