About the Item

Filigree glass, made in Nuutajarvi in the late 1850s using techniques inspired by Venetian glass. The technique, which had fallen into disuse, was revived by Kaj Franck in the early 1950s and brought back to production in 1961. Nuutajarvi's filigree glass is made by inserting thin, elongated rods of coloured glass into wooden moulds with inner grooves, blowing transparent glass into the moulds to fuse them together, and twisting them during the process. The selection of the colours and thicknesses of the coloured glass rods, as well as their arrangement, is done by Kaj Franck himself. This is a unique piece featuring black filigree glass in the shape of a Black Swan. Signed ‘K.Franck Nuutajarvi Notsjo’
