About the Item

This impressive antique French terracotta olive oil jar was crafted in Provence, southern France, circa 1860. Monumental in scale and beautifully proportioned, the vessel features a classic baluster form with a thick rolled rim, paired strap handles at the shoulder, and a traditional low-set pouring spout near the base, all characteristic of large Provençal jars once used for storing and decanting olive oil. The upper third is finished in a rich honey to deep amber glaze that was dipped by hand, creating natural drips and tonal variation as it descends into the warm buff clay body below. The lower section remains largely unglazed, revealing the coarse terracotta and decades of authentic wear. Mineral deposits, glaze losses, and surface abrasions speak to its original utilitarian purpose and add to the remarkable timeworn patina that only a true antique can achieve. With its generous scale and strong sculptural silhouette, this antique jar makes a commanding decorative statement in an entryway, wine cellar, garden room, or as a focal point in a rustic or Mediterranean interior. Not all antique Italian glazed Olive Oil Jars or Vases are created equal and this particular Olive Oil jar’s colors are simply beyond spectacular. Dating from the late 1800’s and discovered in a field in the south of Italy by an old friend. Most people refer to these as amphora jars, beginning in the Neolithic Period and running from approximately 9000BC to 3500BC. Generally, Amphorae were used in large numbers to transport Olive Oil and Wine. The design trade and most antique dealers simply call these vessels or Olive Oil Jars.
