About the Item

This sculptural biomorphic vase, produced by Fábrica Aleluia in Portugal during the 1950s, represents one of the most expressive moments of the factory’s modernist output. Aleluia was responsible for some of the most cosmopolitan faience produced in Portugal in the 20th century, distinguished by its inventive forms and a decorative language that evolved beyond both national and international conventions. During the 1950s and 60s, the factory shifted from classical silhouettes toward dynamic, asymmetrical compositions exploring movement, negative space, and the fluidity of organic curves. This model is an archetypal example: a looping, elongated structure carved open at the center, offering a sculptural presence that changes from every viewpoint. The outer surface features a high-gloss black glaze punctuated by vibrant geometric accents in red, yellow, and white, while the interior presents a warm yellow luster glaze transitioning into soft grey tones—an uncommon variation within Aleluia’s biomorphic series. The piece remains in good original vintage condition, displaying normal age-related wear. A small chip on the rim is present, clearly shown in the photographs, but the vase remains structurally sound and visually striking. A highly collectible example of mid-century Portuguese ceramic modernism.
