About the Item

We are pleased to offer for sale a beautiful mid-20th century porcelain jar whose black-and-white “lithographic” decoration celebrates classical art and the enduring fascination it held for European travelers during the era of the Grand Tour in Italy. This finely crafted Bavarian porcelain jar was produced by the historic Hutschenreuther manufactory, now part of Rosenthal, and is decorated with designs by Fabius von Gugel inspired by the frescoes of Pompeii. The black decoration on a white porcelain ground recalls 18th-century prints, lithographs, and drypoints, further enlivened and enriched by delicate gilt enamel details. The technique and stylistic approach closely evoke the work of Piero Fornasetti, who frequently reinterpreted classical themes through a modern decorative lens. The piece is in good vintage condition, showing no cracks or imperfections. Please feel free to reach out with any additional questions.
