About the Item

A rare and highly decorative antique Chekpump US Gallon petrol and oil measure, crafted in copper and brass and originally used as an official measuring vessel for checking the accuracy of fuel dispensing equipment. Chekpump measures were used by weights and measures departments and trading standards officers to verify that petrol pumps were dispensing the correct quantity of fuel. These specialist vessels formed an important part of the early regulation of fuel measurement and are now highly sought-after pieces of automobilia, industrial history and vintage garage memorabilia. This example is marked “U.S. GALLON”, making it particularly interesting to collectors. The copper body is complemented by brass handles and detailing, giving the piece an attractive aged industrial character. Historically, similar measures were produced in graduated capacities and were often marked with official verification stamps, serial numbers and regional identification. This example provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of fuel measurement and early petrol station equipment. The combination of aged copper, brass fittings and substantial construction also makes this an excellent decorative display piece for a garage, workshop, industrial-style interior, bar or collector's display.
