About the Item

A striking mid-20th century Italian scavo glass vase inspired by ancient Roman amphora forms. The softly rounded body, narrow foot, rolled mouth, and graceful loop handles are finished in a muted blush-pink tone with the distinctive weathered surface associated with scavo glass. Its powdery, excavated appearance gives the vase the character of an archaeological object while the unexpected color keeps it fresh and decorative. Beautiful displayed empty as sculpture or filled with olive branches, it would add quiet presence to a console, library table, mantel, or collected Palm Beach interior. Scavo glass was created in the mid-20th century by using a technique involving the application, to the surface of an object, of substances that, when heated to about 1470°F (800°C), fuse and create an effect similar to weathering, thereby imitating glass from an archeological excavation.
