About the Item

A compelling example of French mid-century modernist ceramics, this sculptural double-neck vase was produced by Atelier Revernay , one of France's most distinguished art pottery studios, founded in 1896 as an offshoot of the celebrated Utzschneider & Cie faïence group in Digoin (Sarreguemines). The atelier became renowned for its artistic stoneware, bridging the decorative traditions of Art Nouveau and Art Deco with the bold formal experimentation of the postwar era. The matte cream-white glaze serves as a pristine ground for hand-applied black linear decoration , bold, gestural strokes that draw freely on the abstract vocabulary of Picasso and the Vallauris school, as well as the graphic idiom of contemporaries such as Roger Capron and the Accolay potters. The dual-opening design allows for creative floral arrangements of varied heights and textures. The piece sits confidently on a flat, unglazed oval foot and is signed "Revernay" in ink to the underside, with what appears to be a production number, consistent with the atelier's known marking practice. Revernay biomorphic vases of this type are actively collected and appear regularly at major auction houses and design galleries. The combination of sculptural ambition, hand-painted decoration, and a prestigious French provenance makes this piece a strong addition to any collection of mid-century studio ceramics.
